pt3-hints2

For hints on any of the puzzles in this part, go to that particular puzzle. The hints and solutions below are about this part as a whole.

You can solve the four puzzles in this section in any order. They can be solved on their own, and each solves to two runes.

Each rune will correspond to a number 1 through 4. When you finish all 4 puzzles, you’ll have two runes assigned to each number. Translate those runes to form a 4-letter word.

Make sure you’ve matched each rune to the correct number. The solutions for individual puzzles can confirm them, if you’re still stuck.

Port’s Objects – 2: Eagle; 3: Llama

Conspiracy Fanatic – 3: Ladder; 4: Torch

Tracking Port – 1: Llama; 4: Arrow

Brab’s Walking-Talkie – 1: Eagle; 2: Arrow

Each numbered star corresponds to two runes. Using the rune alphabet you discovered in Part 1, you can translate these runes to letters. The runes and their translations are:

1: Llama and Eagle = H

2: Eagle and Arrow = E

3: Llama and Ladder = A

4: Torch and Arrow = T

HEAT will open the four-letter lock inside your box. Line up the letters along the edge of the lock.

You’ll need to sort these objects into 4 groups of 5. Two objects are placed in the grid for you already. The image in the bottom section is a marshmallow.

The objects are grouped based on their physical attributes. You do not need to name these items to sort them.

“Food or kitchen-related items” is not a group you’re looking for.

I don’t know what one or more of these items are.

A list of the objects on the tiles: button, plate, pear, key, kettle, sponge, doughnut, knife, jellyfish, comb, pail, pirate, tree, shield.

The two objects already placed on the grid are a shield and a marshmallow.

What are the 4 groups?

The four groups are: Green things, round things, metal things, and squishy things.

I have a solution, but I don’t know what to do with it.

Each puzzle in this section will give you two runes, each matched with a number 1 through 4.

This puzzle will give you a rune matched with 2 and a rune matched with 3 (the two corners labeled with stars).

Solution

The top group is all metal items. The left group is all green items. The right group is all round items. The bottom group is all squishy items.

The pail is placed over the 2. On the back of the pail is Rune 6: Eagle.

The doughnut is placed over the 3. On the back of the donut is Rune 4: Llama.

Make sure you’re using the ruler provided to create straight lines between the push pins.

You’ll be connecting sets of three items that are somehow related, forming 6 triangles in the process.

Each triangle contains one image and two newspaper headlines.

You’re looking for three words that go together to make a phrase. These phrases are all of the form “First, second, and third” and are well-known groups that are said together.

On the bottom left side is a headline that says “Is It a Fruit or a Vegetable? Ketchup Ingredient Tells All!” This is hinting at a specific food.

The bottom left headline hints at Tomato. It can be paired with the picture of Lettuce and the headline that start with “Bacon”. All sets use this same grouping – one image (Lettuce), one headline that defines the word (Tomato), and one headline that starts with the word (Bacon).

The images, from top to bottom, represent Rock (that’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), Paul (that’s Paul Bunyan), Fire, Lettuce, (the) Lion, and Pop.

Two of the groups are musical groups, both getting their start in the 1960s.

The groups are:

Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato

Snap, Crackle, and Pop

Earth, Wind, and Fire

Peter, Paul, and Mary

Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Make sure you connect each group with straight lines, forming 6 triangles.

Look at the red words. All but 3 of them should be crossed out. Read those that remain. Read them from top to bottom. The intro text says this puzzle will give runes for 3 and 4 – the top word is 3 and the bottom word is 4.

The groups are:

Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato

Snap, Crackle, and Pop

Earth, Wind, and Fire

Peter, Paul, and Mary

Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe

Rock, Paper, Scissors

The words not crossed out are Ladder and Torch, corresponding to runes 3 and 4.

You’ll need to place all the pieces on the grid provided. No pieces are placed over the shaded squares. Every other square (the squares with the runes) will be covered. On the grid, there are some lines given – the path on the tiles will cross over these lines, but they won’t necessarily be at the edge of a piece.

The tile in the upper left corner is the L piece (the one labeled with the 1 star).

The tile in the upper right corner is the Y piece.

Two pieces have a hole in them. You should be able to see a rune through those holes. They’re your solution.

Shown is the completed path. Rune 1 is the Llama, and rune 4 is the Arrow.

Do each of these paragraphs sound familiar? It sounds like Brab is describing something. Depending on how good your 1980s trivia is, you may need to do some Googling.

Each paragraph is describing a classic movie from the 1980s.

Each paragraph (except the last one) has two numbers at the end. The longer of those two numbers matches the length of the name of the movie.

The next hint will give you the name of each movie.

The Shining

Chariots of Fire

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

The Karate Kid

The Terminator

Caddyshack

Ghostbusters

Airplane

Footloose

Of the two numbers, the longer corresponds to the length of the movie. The shorter one tells you which letter in the movie title is important.

The 9 paragraphs each describe a classic movie from the 1980s. They are:

The Shining

Chariots of Fire

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

The Karate Kid

The Terminator

Caddyshack

Ghostbusters

Airplane

Footloose

Each paragraph also ends with you encountering a series of items and choosing one of them (There were 10 rooms and I ran into the 4th one). The larger number matches the length of the title of each movie, and the smaller one tells you which letter to choose out of that title. For the last one, Footloose, it simply tells you to “walk all the way to the end of the alley”, hinting that you need to take the last letter of that title. Taking the corresponding letters from each title, you get the words SIX AND ONE. These give you the two runes for this puzzle. For star 1, you get rune 6: Eagle. For star 2, you get rune 1: Arrow.
